The Ravelympics

For those non-knitbloggers who occasionally grace my site with their presence (hi Nana!), the Ravelympics is an "event" being held by the knitting/crocheting networking site, Ravelry. The purpose of the Ravelympics is to start and complete a project of one's choosing between the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. There are events with cute titles like "Designer Discus", "Sweater Sprint", "Afghan Marathon", etc. Sounds fun, right?

Well.

As with most things of this nature that I decide to take part in, I have taken on a project that is the most difficult thing I could possibly knit and finish within the 17-day span of the Olympics. Just as I foolishly signed up for three accounting classes this summer, and as I brazenly marched in the Classics Chair's office the summer before my senior year of college and announced that I would earn a degree in Greek & Latin even if that meant taking beginning Latin plus 100% of the upper division requirements in one year, I have signed myself up for a Ravelympics project that involves:

1. Designing a sweater from scratch
2. Long length
3. Fingering-weight yarn
4. Ruffles/pleats
5. The most seaming as is humanly possible in one sweater

And why? Well, even though I'm not an inherently competitive person, I apparently have some strange desire to see just how far I can push myself and how much stress I can take in finishing something that was ridiculous to begin and whose finishing will have no real impact on my life. Aside from my own pride in having completed something ridiculous, I suppose.

So here's what I'm hoping my Ravelympics sweater will look like (courtesy of Anthropologie):

And here's what it looks like right now:

There is quite a bit left to do -- I'm completely redoing that ruffle tonight because it's terrible -- but I think I might actually finish in time to get my "Ravlete 2008" badge. The bad news is that I am so sick of knitting and seaming this thing, of spending literally every single spare moment I have on it, that I don't know if I'll be able to look at it again after it's done...

You did set yourself a daunting task. If it was me I would consider it an artificial deadline and not worry about completing it in a time limit. But, then, my projects can sometimes linger on for years....

BTW, what vitamins do you take - I could use some of your energy.

It looks great so far! If you really do become sick of it - you can always hold a blog contest. Either way - I say wear it with pride after all the labor of unlove. lol.

Wow! That looks cool, even though it's simply laying on a chair. I hope you can look at it when it's done. Hope you'll wear it too!
Lovely design, and certainly very challenging.

Oh my goodness, that is a ton of knitting. Well, if you finish it and can't look at it, perhaps you'll be able to put it away and bring it out in a month or so. Good luck, whatever happens between now and Sunday!

I know the end of the story since I gave you an award this morning.

Great job. I was super amazed and shocked because I had not seen or heard you working on it.
