Patternum Novum: Shadow & Glow

After my last blog post about TNNA, a few of you wrote and asked about the grey and green shawl I was wearing in some of the photos. This one:

This was something I knit up back in May, when things were quite hectic and I needed something soothing and simple to relax with. And now, the pattern is written up so if you'd like something soothing and simple to knit, here it is.

Shadow & Glow - $5 via Ravelry (no account required)

Shadow & Glow is a square shawl -- a shape that happens to be incredibly versatile to wear. My favorite way to wear it is draped over my shoulders as in the first photo -- I like how the graduated stripes play against each other and how the top folds over like a little shawl collar. But you can also fold it in half to make a cushy triangular shawl, too.

And in light fingering weight yarn (Anzula Cloud for the main color -- one of my absolute favorites -- and Shibui Knits Cima for the contrast), it's light enough that you can just kind of scrunch it and wrap it around your neck like a scarf.

The specs...

Sizes: 34"/ 86.5 cm square; 48"/ 122 cm on the diagonal

Yarn: Anzula Cloud (80% Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 575 yds/ 526 m per 114g), 1 skein in Elephant (MC) and Shibui Knits Cima (70% Alpaca, 30% Merino; 328 yds/ 300 m per 50g), 1 skein in Lumen (CC)

Needles: US 6 (4mm) circular needle, 32"/ 80 cm long and same size of needles preferred for working a small circumference in the round (e.g. dpns, two circular needles) if not using Magic Loop technique

Gauge: 17 sts & 24 rows = 4"/ 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch (in the round)

Shadow & Glow is knit from the center out beginning with a Provisional Cast On, after which it's all worked in Stockinette Stitch in the round. The pattern includes a little photo tutorial for the Provisional CO, as well as for the Magic Loop technique, in case you don't happen to be familiar with it.

Lovely shawl! I've never made a square shawl before -- intriguing.
