Patternum Novum :: Thyri Pullover

The Knitscene Winter 2014 issue came out a few weeks ago, and I am horrified that I have not yet posted about it! Especially because (and this is a big deal for me)...my design made the cover.

That's right -- that long-sleeved, round-yoked pullover in a gorgeous Madelinetosh hue is mine. It's been weeks, but I'm still pinching myself and looking at the Interweave website to make sure it's still true and they didn't change their minds. When I get my own copy of the magazine? I'm totally framing it.

So what exactly is this design of mine? I'm so glad you asked! The Thyri Pullover (pronounced "TIR-ee" like the pretty character on Vikings...because Amy Palmer is awesome) is a top-down pullover with long sleeves with thumb holes -- so you can pull the cuffs over your hands if you'd like, to keep them warm during those long Swedish winters.

Thyri is part of the Scandinavian story (being of Scandinavian ancestry myself, I could not be more proud that my design was even selected, let alone the cover). I wanted to make this a super easy sweater, easy enough for beginners, so instead of placing colorwork patterns in the circular yoke, I simply added some reverse Stockinette stitch bands. So there's some interest up there, but it's very simple to execute.

And those thumb holes. I love a cuff with a thumb hole. (But they're easily left off if you don't.)

You can see more about Thyri on Ravelry here, and see the rest of the patterns in this fantastic issue here.

I love it! Top down is always the way to go. But I want to knit it back and forth as a cardigan (too hot for pullovers in Texas, esp. when you're of a certain age and can no longer control your body temperature). Any suggestions for a button band, or should I just improvise?

@gloria -- It shouldn't be too hard to convert Thyri into a cardigan, you might just need to adjust the number of plain rows at the end of the yoke if you space out the increases differently (for example, you want all the increases to be on a RS row and some may end up on a WS once converted to knitted flat). And for the button bands -- unless you want to add some extra width, I would take out 1/2" to 1" from the total circumference of the sweater (just CO a little less and do a couple fewer inc's in the last inc row), then add button bands of the same width. I'd do 2x2 ribbing for button bands, but it's really whatever you want to do. :) I hope that helps!!

Beautiful sweater, and congrats on the cover! This looks so cozy, and the color is gorgeous, too.

I haven't seen Vikings yet, but I want to! My in-laws kept calling Erik "Ragnar" while he was in utero (we didn't share his name before he was born, but hinted it would be something Scandinavian).

Very nice! I treated myself to the magazine thanks to your post. :-) By the way, Thyri might be a good one to convert to a cardigan by steeking it. In fact, I may just try that! I'm taking a steeking class at the Green Mountain Fiber Fest in a couple of weeks...

Very Nice! I' m doing this pullover. I have a problem at the final of the body. Sizes 34 (403/4, 441/2, 51) only. The number of increases, for example for the size 34, are 21, sl m, and more 21, that would give at the end 170 +21+21=212 sts , but we could read at the pattern 172!
Could you help me with this? What am I missing? Many thanks.

Graça Coutinho, there are only two increases in that row for those sizes. For the size 34, you k1, M1L, then [p2, k2] 21 times (just the p2, k2...you don't do 21 increases), sl m, p1, M1LP, then [k2, p2] 21 times (not 21 increases).

I am making the Thyri sweater now and unless I am totally bonkers, on the set up round before the raglan increase it reads for my size: K 44 for right sleeve place marker, K 74 for front, pm, K 44 for left sleeve, pm, K 74 back. But since I am doing it in the round and the RS is always facing me shouldn't it read L sleeve, front, R sleeve, back?

That's how it would be if you were knitting the sweater bottom-up. Because it's top-down, the right sleeve comes first.

Thanks Hilary. I guess I was bonkers. :( I have never done a sweater from top-down and my brain was thinking bottom-up and visually thinking of the top as the bottom. Would look pretty silly wearing the sleeves around my hips wouldn't it? :) Thanks again and for the quick response.

No you're not bonkers! It happens to the best of us! :)
