The Fair

Last weekend Neill and I, along with my cousin and her gentleman, made a trip to my home town for the Stanislaus County Fair. Now, it's easy to romanticize the fair (especially with the über cool Hiptamatic camera app on my phone), what with its carnival rides and games and general rural goodness. But in actuality, it's usually extremely hot (the 100's this year), pretty filthy (including the air, if there happens to be a tractor pull going on), and filled with many an unsavory character. Regardless, no summer is complete without it. The best part? The food, of course.

So we put on our Western garb...

And started with the animals, raised by the various 4-H groups in the county: piggies...

goats...

cows...

bunnies...

and birds.

Heidi (my cousin) has dreams of being a 4-H girl herself.

In my opinion, the very best fair food is served at the VFW booth. Their cheeseburgers rival In-n-Out's, I swear.

Mmm...

We played some games,

and rode the Ferris Wheel.

The home arts section of the exhibit hall was a little sparse this year, but I thought this first place crocheted cardigan was adorable.

My other favorite food item is the pie from the Latif's booth (HA! Latif's has a Yelp page!!).

(This was after the 4-H milkshakes. Piggies.)

We headed back to the car at around 10pm exhausted, full, and sweaty (it was still 100 degrees), just like every other year. I love how some things never change. :)

Sounds awesome. I love the white trash fairs myself! We like to Count the Carnies.

There's one fair here where you put wheels on a big vegetable from the bin (carrot, zucchini, ear or corn) and then race them down a chute.

I never seem to win.

looks like so much fun!! Mayer you should enter the home arts exhibit next year? I'm sure you'd win the blue ribbon!

L.O.V.E. the fair.

You said it best: it's really gross and dirty and brings out some, er, interesting people...but it's so, so awesome.

The fair is a little sketchy - but gosh, it just reminds me of childhood! What gorgeous pictures - I love the hiptomatic app.

I'm in Fresno and have always made a point of going to the good ol' fair... even when I lived in Santa Barbara and it took me 8 hours round-trip to get back here! The tacos alone made the trip worth it.

An accurate description of a day at the fair - LOL Looks like you had a perfect day :)

Isn't a fabulous "shack shake" style hamburger THE best part of Summer?
